Commercial pilots are able to fly for hire. To meet the qualifications, you must be at least 18 years old, hold a Category I medical, and meet the CARs requirements for hours flown. You must also pass a flight test and a Transport Canada written test. There is no hourly requirement or written test for this rating. However, there is a flight test. The hours flown should be taken with a flight instructor and will vary from person to person. To receive this rating, you must first hold at least a private licence. In order to fly when the visibility is poor or the clouds are very low, you must obtain an instrument rating. You will need at least 40 hours of instrument time, and 50 hours of solo cross country time. Also required will be a flight test and a written test. The Air Transport Pilot Licence consists of 2 written examinations. At Calgary Flight Training Centre, we have instructors on staff who are able to help you prepare for this exam.
